Making a Great First Impression
Making a great first impression
is not just important in everyday life, but in online
dating as well. Your first impression often determines
whether you will ever communicate with that person again
or not. If you give a bad first impression, don’t expect
to hear from them again; but if you make a great first
impression, you just may have made a friend for life!
There are
several keys to making a great first impression. Sense
of humor is certainly at the top of the list, since that
is often the number one requirement in compatible
relationships. Something resembling intelligence is also
a strong attractant. If you use bad grammar, misspell a
lot or don’t use words properly, you may come off
sounding dim-witted. Male or female, that’s just not
attractive.
In online
dating, first impressions come in two forms – profiles
and initial communications. If another online dating
conducts a search and reads your profile, that becomes
their first impression of you. If you find their profile
and decide to send a first email, that becomes your
first impression. Therefore your profile must be well
written, as should your email communications. You can’t
rely on emailing other people and disregard your
profile, because as soon as you email someone, assuming
they enjoy your email, their next move will be to read
your profile!
When writing
your profile, don’t rush through it. Take a little time
to think about who you really are, and what you really
want to gain from your online dating experience. Be
confident and positive at all times. Try to throw a
little humor in there, but don’t force it – be natural.
When you’re done, read back over your profile. Make sure
it sounds as good as you thought you wrote it. Chances
are, you’ll think of more things to elaborate on as you
re-read your profile. Also, be sure to run the profile
through a spell checker before posting. As we mentioned
above, grammar is an extremely important part of making
a great first impression.
When you email
someone for the first time, be sure you read over the
person’s profile very well. Use common interests and ask
a lot of questions about those interests. For example,
if they like exercise, ask if they go hiking or jogging,
or go to the gym. Tell them about your exercising
practices. Be careful to focus a lot more on them than
you do on yourself.
While writing,
be sure to refer back to the profile to get more ideas.
Use natural humor to the best of your abilities, but
don’t overdo it. And again, spell-check everything. Read
back over the email, fixing any punctuation problems or
anything else you come across.
If you can
maintain an interesting profile and write worthwhile
emails, you just might be surprised how successful the
response rate will be. A creative person who is
confident and positive in nature will always make a
great first impression.
